Avoiding Costly Mistakes when Starting Your Sleepover Rental Business

In the slumber party rental business, you're bound to get creative requests from clients if you accept customization requests (often we are put in a situation where we are quickly researching and learning about Gen-Z terms for decor aesthetics, take "Cottage Core", for example!). Some sleepover themes are easy to accommodate, while others require a little more creativity and effort on your end to work out in a way that is cost-effective for you, aesthetically pleasing, and most importantly, meeting (and hopefully exceeding) client expectations.
It can be tempting to say “yes” to everything, especially when you're starting out and eager to book new clients for sleepovers. But there’s a common mistake that many of us make when it comes to themed decor that can hurt your profits—one I made myself in the beginning.

Avoid Costly Inventory Purchasing Mistakes When Starting Out
In the early days of my business, when a client asked for a theme I didn’t have in my inventory, I would often rush to buy decorations just to please them. I would think, “It’s worth it because I’m still making money on the booking.” And don't get me wrong, it is INCREDIBLY important to build your clientele. But over time, you realize that this approach isn't sustainable because sometimes you are spending money on decor you won't use again, which leads to unnecessary waste and poor financial decisions (and it takes up room in your storage).
There's a smarter way to handle these situations—and it all comes down to thinking about your inventory and pricing strategy in the right way.
In fact, there's a critical piece of advice I wish I’d known sooner. When clients ask for something you don’t already have, instead of just absorbing the cost, charge an additional customization fee. It’s the perfect way to protect your profit margins and ensure you aren’t losing money on something that isn’t going to benefit you long-term.
